Falcon Motorsport
Established
in 1989 initially under the banner of Streatfield Motorsport taken from
its founder and team principal Nick Streatfield and then changed to Falcon
Motorsport in 1994. The team has contested in a number of championships
including British Formula 3, UK Formula Renault, BARC Formula Renault,
Formula Ford and Formula Ford 2000. Among the drivers who Falcon have
run and helped to develop include three times World Touring Car champion
Andy Priaulx, current Super Aguri
F1 test driver James Rossiter,
Formula Renault champion Danny Watts,
A1 GP driver Alex Lloyd and Indy
Car driver Katherine Legge.
Formula Renault 2007
Once again concentrating on the
BARC Championship. Robin Palmer,
now in his fourth year of driving with Falcon Motorsport was joined by
Sten Pentus (Estonia) and Craig
Copeland who moved to the team in his
second year of BARC Renault. Robin has now become a seasoned campaigner
in BARC Renault and makes progress each year in a championship that has
got a lot more competitive in the last year or two. Sten who had contested
a handful of Eurocup Formula Renault races in 2006 started the season
very well with a second place at Croft before hitting sponsorship difficulties
mid season. After a couple of rounds away Sten was to return in August
for the remainder of the season. Although not quite repeating that early
season success, there were some more strong performances. Craig joined
the team after the first round but soon showed his experience and superb
race craft to give the team a string of strong performances that sadly
never quite brought the results that he deserved.
For the Formula Renault Winter Series, Sten Pentus continued with Falcon
and was joined by Frenchman Damien Charveriat.
With the usual accidents and changeable weather of the Winter Series,
it was an up and down time for our drivers. Sten finished his season with
a stunning drive at Croft taking a well-deserved victory in the final
race.
Formula
Renault 2006
A return to the UK Formula Renault championship
this year with experienced Irish driver, Henry O'Friel.
Pre season testing went well but as the racing season got under way Henry
was to suffer some recurring health problems meaning that by mid season
he reluctantly had to step down from driving.
In the BARC Formula Renault championship Robin Palmer
once again joined the team alongside a mid season signing of Andy
Meyrick. Although not able to mount a
championship challenge, Andy did make very rapid progress and secured
pole position at Thruxton in only his third formula Renault race meeting.
He was to be cruelly robed of victory in that race by a back marker but
did go on to a strong second pace in the final meeting of the year. Dean
Stoneman fresh from karting success joined
the team for the last two rounds of the championship in preparation for
the Winter Series where he made further progress in what should be a bright
future for him.
Formula Renault 2005
For 2005 the team focused on the new BARC Formula Renault Championship.
Heading the team was new signing, Matt
Russell who was looking for a
fresh start after a difficult year in UK Formula Renault. Matt was joined
at Falcon by Robin Palmer,
Hesham Ali and Nick Wilson.
From the start Falcon set the pace with a string of seven pole positions,
four race wins and six fastest laps to become vice champions with Matt
Russell.
Formula Renault 2004
For 2004 Falcon signed the experienced
Mexican Formula Renault racer Carlos
Mastretta to partner Nik
Goodfellow who was back for a
second year. Carlos made a steady start to the season adapting to the
British circuits and then made some big advances in the second half of
the season with four top ten places. Very sadly for the second year in
a row Nik Goodfellow had sponsorship difficulties just at the point when
he was making good progress in the championship. He was replaced in the
team by Jamie Gruber who made the difficult mid season jump into Formula
Renault.
Formula Renault 2003
Nik Goodfellow was retained for the 2003
season and John Byrne
made the big jump from World Champioship Karting to Formula Renault. Sadly
Nik Goodfellow was to run into
sponsorship problems half way through the year but John Byrne made rapid
progress finishing the season with 4th on the grid for the last race.
For the Winter Series Paul Rees made a welcome return and was joined in
the team by Alex Buncombe.
Alex was a contender from the start and finished a close fourth in the
Series.
Formula Renault 2002
For the 2002 season Falcon expanded to
three cars and signed Robin Rudholm,
Ben Reeves
and James Rossiter.
Both Rudholm and Rossiter had many strong performances throughout the
year capped by an excellent fourth and fifth at Thruxton. For the Winter
Series the team ran Nik Goodfellow,
Paul Rees
(son of March and Arrows founder Alan Rees) and Sam Hignett.
Formula Renault 2001
Danny Watts
and Daniel Welch
joined the team for the 2001 season. Watts had partnered Kimi Raikkonen
in 2000 and won the inaugural British race. After front running performances
in the first two races of the season Danny had the biggest accident in
Formula Renault history at Oulton Park. The car was completely destroyed
but two weeks later, with a new car, he bounced back with the first of
two race wins for Falcon Motorsport. More strong performances throughout
the season secured third in the championship and a McLaren Autosport nomination.
Alex Lloyd
and Katherine Legge
joined the team for the Winter Series with Alex taking a fine third in
the championship.
Formula Renault 2000
Falcon returned to Formula Renault for
1999 in preparation for the new and exciting Formula Renault 2000Formula.
Mark Mcloughlin
and Dillon Battistini
signed for the 2000 series with Alex
Kapadia replacing Battistini mid
season. Mcloughlin was to take three pole positions during the season.
An achievement only surpassed by current Formula One driver, Kimi Raikkonen.
A strong end of season performance by both drivers ensured that Falcon
finished the season in fourth place in the championship.
Formula Three
1997 saw the team graduate to the British
Formula Three Championship with Andy
Priaulx and Damon
Wellman in the National class.
Wellman finished second in the championship. Stephan
White and Steve
Hayer were the team drivers in
1998.
Formula Renault
A change of name to Falcon Motorsport
in 1994 and back to Formula Renault with Finnish driver Sami
Lahokoski and Simon
Graves. Ian
Astley joined the team in 1995
alongside Graves who took second in the championship. 1996 gave Falcon
their most successful season to date. Ian Astley and Matt
Bettley, taking 11 pole positions
and 9 race wins. Astley, bringing the team its second title with Bettley,
a close second.
Formula Ford 1992-3
Returning to its roots in Formula Ford
for the introduction of the new Zetec engine. The team ran up and coming
drivers Kalle Jokinen,
Nicholas Rondet
and Tudor Owen.
Formula Renault
Retaining the driver pairing for the
third year. Streatfield moved to the new Formula Renault championship
for the 1990 season, enjoying much success in the popular and competitive
formula.
For 1991 Streatfield ran Dave Coyne,
Fionn Murray
and Adrian Cottrell.
Coyne took pole in a Eurocup round before graduating to Formula 3000 mid
season and Cottrell finished second in the British Championship.
Streatfield Motorsport
Formed in 1985 to run Nick Streatfield
in the British Formula Ford 1600 Championship. In 1986 the team and Nick
graduated to Formula Ford 2000 and expanded to a two car team in 1987
with Rob Manger.
In 1988 Streatfield stood down from driving to concentrate on management
and engineering. Patrick Blakeney
replaced him and brought the team their first title followed by second
place in 1989.
